Sustainability at Killarney Avenue

An O’Donoghue Ring Collection Hotel

At Killarney Avenue Hotel, we understand the importance of looking after the place we call home. Nestled beside the Golden Gates of Killarney National Park, we’re mindful of our responsibility to operate in a way that supports the environment and contributes positively to our local community.

Through the O’Donoghue Ring Collection’s Our Green Way programme, we are working steadily toward more sustainable hospitality by making thoughtful choices that aim to reduce our environmental impact while continuing to offer a comfortable, welcoming stay for our guests.

Our Green Way – Everyday Sustainability

Sustainability is something we approach in practical, day-to-day ways. Across the hotel, we focus on:

  • Reducing energy and water consumption
  • Minimising waste and cutting out single-use plastics
  • Sourcing ingredients and materials as locally and responsibly as we can
  • Engaging our team in small changes that add up

Each of our O’Donoghue Ring Collection hotels has a dedicated Green Team to help embed these efforts into daily operations, from how we manage laundry and lighting, to how we work with suppliers and serve food. We also participate in national programmes such as Green Hospitality and Fifty Shades Greener, which help us stay accountable and keep improving.

Recognition Along the Way

Killarney Avenue Hotel is proud to have received the Green Hospitality Eco-Certification, recognising our commitment to energy, water, and waste reduction. While sustainability is a journey, not a destination, this independent certification helps guide us and keep our efforts on track.

Killarney Urban Farm – Local First

One of the initiatives we’re connected to through the O’Donoghue Ring Collection is Killarney Urban Farm – a small hydroponic farm in the centre of town that supplies fresh produce to many of our kitchens. It’s a way to cut down on food miles while offering guests ingredients that are as fresh and local as possible.

Dishes served in Druids Restaurant and The Kenmare Rooms regularly feature greens and herbs from the farm, which are grown without soil and with minimal water.

Working Together Locally

Sustainability also means engaging with the local community. In 2023, we joined the Killarney Coffee Cup Initiative, which encouraged over 50 local businesses to take part in a deposit-return scheme for reusable coffee cups. It’s a simple change with long-term benefits, and we’re glad to play a part in it.

A Stay That Supports Something More

Our approach to sustainability isn’t about grand claims. It’s about doing what we can, where we can, with the understanding that even small improvements matter. From how we manage waste and energy to how we design guest experiences, we aim to be thoughtful, responsible, and transparent.

We know our guests care about these things too. Whether it’s enjoying a dish made with local ingredients, seeing fewer plastics in your room, or noticing subtle energy-saving measures throughout the property, these quiet efforts are part of how we aim to make your stay both comfortable and considered.
